The City of Cortez Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, pursuant to Article IV of the Charter of the City of Cortez, the purpose being to fill five (5) positions on the Cortez City Council taking office on the 27th day of April, 2010. There shall be elected three council members for terms of four years each, and two council members for a term of two years each. Candidates for election must be 21 years or age or older, a registered elector, and a resident of the City of Cortez for (1) year preceding the date of the election. The Mayor is chosen among the seven Councilmembers and shall receive compensation of five hundred dollars per month. Each of the six Councilmembers shall receive compenstion of four hundred dollars per month. Such compensation shall be paid twice a month. No Council person shall receive a payment for a meeting which he or she did not attend. Petitions and Certificate of Nomination forms may be obtained from the City Clerk's office at 210 East Main Street on or following the 12th day of February, 2010, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Signatures may be obtained on the petitions beginning Monday, February 15, 2010. Completed certificates and petitions must be filed in the City Clerk's office no later than 5:00 p.m., on March 5, 2010. Registered Voters living north of Main Street shall vote at Precinct 1 which will be at the Montezuma County Annex Building, located at the corner of Montezuma Avenue and North Chestnut Street. Registered Voters living south of Main Street shall vote at Precinct 2 which will be at the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church, located at 350 South Washington. The precincts will be open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on election day, April 6, 2010. Residents of the City of Cortez must be registered to vote by Monday, March 8, 2010. Registration can be completed at the County Clerk's office located at 109 West Main Street. Absentee applications may be obtained from the City Clerk and absentee voting will be held beginning March 25 and ending April 2, 2010, at the City Clerk's office, located at 210 East Main Street (City Hall).
