  3. 7th Annual Cortez Historic Preservation Day-Remember Woolworth's?

    Events kick off on Tuesday, May 10, with a presentation by Jill Seyfarth of Cultural Resource Planning. Jill will discuss her latest research on historic structures in the Original Townsite on the north side of Main Street, entitled “Remember Woolworth’s?” Funded by a Colorado Certified Local Government grant to the City of Cortez, she will discuss the impact that the 1950s oil and gas boom had on businesses on Main St. Hosted by the Cortez Historic Preservation Board, the free program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center at 25 N. Market Street.

  5. 7th Annual Cortez Historic Preservation Day-SAVE the McElmo Flume

    May 12, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM @ Hampton Hall at the Methodist Church

    On Thursday, May 12, Linda Towle will present an update on Montezuma County’s efforts to SAVE the McElmo Creek Flume. The repairs to the Flume’s foundation were completed this winter, and construction of the new stop on the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway will be completed this spring. This new stop will tell the history of water in the Montezuma Valley, and the extensive canal and flume system built in the late 1890s. The County has applied for a grant to complete the repair of the wooden trough of the Flume. Her talk will begin at 7 PM at Hampton Hall at the Methodist Church on N. Park St., and is sponsored by the Montezuma County Historical Society.

  8. 7th Annual Cortez Historic Preservation Day-Preserving Old Buildings: Why Bother?

    On Saturday, May 21, the City of Cortez will present a National Register plaque to KSJD/Community Radio in recognition of their efforts to preserve the historic Montezuma Valley National Bank building. KSJD Executive Director Jeff Pope will describe the process of preserving a nationally and locally significant historic building. His presentation, entitled “Preserving Old Buildings: Why Bother?” will be held at the Sunflower Theater at 8 E. Main Street at 10 AM. Doors open at 9:30 for coffee and refreshments.

This will be a tribute to the people who reorganized the Historical Society and started them on the path they are on today. The Historical Society’s ultimate goal is a Pioneer Museum. Everyone is invited, especially those who are interested in preserving the history of Montezuma County and its pioneer roots.
